Cold weather does not end the airsoft season in most of Europe - wet weather does. Players tolerate cold well; they quit early because they got wet and then cold. Almost everything below is about managing moisture.
Why cotton is the wrong answer
Cotton absorbs water and holds it against your skin, then pulls heat out of you as it evaporates. Once it is wet from sweat or rain, it stays wet. A cotton hoodie under a carrier is the classic mistake: you start the game warm and finish it cold.
Use synthetic or merino base layers instead. Both move moisture away from the skin and both keep insulating when damp. Merino is warmer for the weight and resists odour over a long day; synthetics are cheaper and dry faster.
The three layers, and what each is for
- Base layer. Against the skin, synthetic or merino, fitted rather than loose. Its job is moving sweat away, not providing warmth.
- Mid layer. Insulation - fleece or a light synthetic jacket. This is the layer you take off when you start moving and put back on when you stand still.
- Outer layer. Wind and rain protection. In European winter this matters more than bulk, because wind removes heat far faster than still cold air.
The important idea is that you adjust layers rather than buying one heavy jacket. You will be hot walking to the staging area and cold standing in a hide, sometimes within the same twenty minutes.
Adjustments once it is cold
Your kit behaves differently in winter, and three things change:
- Batteries lose capacity. Cold LiPo and NiMH cells deliver less. Keep spares in an inside pocket next to your body, and expect reduced shot count per charge.
- Gas performs worse. Gas blowback pistols and rifles lose efficiency sharply in the cold, with weaker cycling and reduced power. This is normal, not a fault.
- Hydration bladders freeze. The hose freezes before the bladder does. Blow the water back into the bladder after drinking and keep the hose routed under a layer.
Hands, feet and fogging
Extremities go first. Thin liner gloves under your normal gloves give you the option of removing the outer pair to work a magazine without exposing bare skin. Carry a spare pair of socks in a waterproof bag - dry socks at lunch change the whole second half of the day.
Fogging gets worse in winter because the temperature difference between your face and the lens is larger. A dual-pane lens helps more than anything, and a mask that vents downward is the other half of the answer.
After the game
Get out of wet layers immediately, and unpack the bag the same evening. Cold-weather gear gets wetter and dirtier than summer kit, and gear left in a sealed bag until next weekend is the fastest route to mildew and rust on hardware.

Frequently asked questions
What should I wear under a plate carrier in winter?
A synthetic or merino base layer with a light fleece over it. Avoid cotton, which holds moisture and pulls heat away once wet.
Why does my gas pistol perform badly in cold weather?
Gas pressure drops with temperature, giving weaker cycling and lower power. It is normal behaviour, not a fault.
How do I stop my hydration hose freezing?
Blow water back into the bladder after each drink and route the hose under a layer of clothing.
Do batteries really lose power in the cold?
Yes. Expect reduced shot count per charge, and keep spare batteries in an inside pocket close to your body.
