Magazine pouches look interchangeable and are not. Two things decide whether a pouch works: which magazine it is shaped for, and how it retains it under movement.
Start with the magazine, not the pouch
Before anything else, identify what you are carrying. The three common airsoft magazine families are STANAG / M4 style (the most common by a wide margin), AK style (distinctly curved and longer), and pistol magazines. Some pouches are sold as universal, and universal usually means a looser fit on all three rather than a good fit on any.
High-capacity magazines are also physically longer than mid-caps. A pouch that fits a mid-cap can be too shallow for a high-cap, leaving it sitting proud where it catches on things.
Retention: the three styles
Open top with elastic or bungee. Fastest draw, least retention. Good for games where you reload standing and often. The risk is losing magazines - running, diving and going prone all work magazines loose. If you use these, use the bungee retainers.
Flap with a buckle or hook-and-loop. Most secure, slowest. Buckles are reliable but need two hands to open cleanly; hook-and-loop is quicker but noisier, and the noise matters during a quiet approach. This is the right choice if you crawl a lot.
Friction / Kydex insert. A moulded insert grips the magazine with no closure at all. Fast and quiet, and retention is adjustable. The trade-off is that they are magazine-specific and can be tight in cold weather with gloved hands.
How many you actually need
Three, for almost everyone. That covers a full game for typical fields and leaves room on the rig for water and a radio. Buying six pouches before your first game is the most common beginner overspend - extra magazines carried on the belt are also slower to reach than they look.
If you run a support weapon with a box magazine, or you play long milsim events, the calculation changes - but it changes after you have played a few games and know your own consumption.
Placement that works
Magazines belong on your support-side front (left for a right-handed shooter) so your firing hand stays on the grip through the reload. Keep the pouches above the belt line and below the sternum - high enough to reach while standing, low enough that they do not foul a plate carrier front panel or stop you going prone.
One more practical note: magazine pouches are the item most often bought in a colour that does not match. Coyote Brown, Ranger Green, Multicam and Wolf Grey are the four you will most easily find matching pouches for later in Europe.

Frequently asked questions
Will STANAG pouches fit AK magazines?
Usually not. AK magazines are curved and longer. Look for pouches specified for AK pattern or genuinely adjustable universal designs.
Why do I keep losing magazines on the field?
Almost always open-top pouches without retainers, combined with going prone. Use the bungee retainers or switch to flapped pouches.
How many magazine pouches should a beginner buy?
Three is enough for a full game at most fields. Buy more after you know how many magazines you actually get through.
Are Kydex inserts worth it?
If you want a fast, quiet draw and you run one magazine type, yes. They are magazine-specific and can feel tight with cold or gloved hands.
